Water & Sanitation
are the most deadly. Childhood diarrhoea is closely associated with insufficient water supply, inadequate sanitation and water contaminated with communicable disease agents. Diarrhoea is estimated to cause over 1.5 million infant deaths per year, which constitutes over 15% of child deaths in developing countries. Over 42,000 deaths occur every week from inadequate water and sanitation facilities each week, 90% of which are children under 5 years of age.
There is an urgent need for action, but all too often water and sanitation are overlooked in the global development agenda, despite being consistently cited as a top priority by communities. Total global investments in water and sanitation would need to double for the Millennium Development Goal targets of halving the proportions of people living without water and sanitation by 2015 to be met.
In response CARLA International has developed water supply and sanitation initiatives that involve the design and implementation of appropriate low cost products and services, training and assistance. Projects that secure adequate water and sanitation facilities for otherwise lacking communities, not only reduce poverty, they prevent the spread of disease and save lives.
